The Commitments closes at the Palace Theatre on 1 November
West End musical The Commitments is to close on Sunday 1 November 2015, after a successful run at the Palace Theatre. The London run will be followed by an extensive 2017 UK and Ireland tour, further details will be announced soon.
Since opening on 8 October 2013, The Commitments – adapted for the stage by Booker Prize-winning Roddy Doyle from his original best-selling novel – has played more than 1,000 shows.
Directed by the award-winning Jamie Lloyd, the show features classic soul songs including ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’, ‘Knock On Wood’, ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ and of course, ‘Mustang Sally’.
Producer Phil McIntyre said: “We’ve had a great run at the Palace Theatre and we now look forward to bringing the people’s musical to people across the UK and Ireland with our 2017 tour.”
The Commitments is the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who shapes an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced.
In the original London cast, the part of Deco – the arrogant but gifted lead singer of the band – was played by Killian Donnelly, due to star later on this year in Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre, having enjoyed success in Memphis the Musical. Since September 2014, the role of Deco has been played by Brian Gilligan.
The lead role of Jimmy Rabbitte, the north Dublin soul band’s manager, is played by Denis Grindel.
