The Girl Who – Edinburgh Festival Fringe

_2014GIRLWHO_ATTThe Girl Who continues at the Assembly George Square Gardens (Spiegeltent Palazzo) until 25 August.

This show is different: make no mistake about it – in fact, this show can be different every day. The heroine of the piece is Anna, delightfully performed by Neshla Caplan. Anna has choices to make – except she doesn’t really make them herself; the audience does instead.

Perfectly situated in the Spiegeltent, this circus-cum-fairy-tale involves the audience before they even enter the tent. Just like all the best fairy tales (or circuses, for that matter) this show is a blend of light and dark; a blend of joy and fear. The music echoes these moods: Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie’s variation of pace and manipulation between major and minor keys are in perfect rhythm with the audience’s reaction to the work being performed.

A tight ensemble with some thrilling harmonies both unsettles and ‘plays’ with the audience throughout.

Only at the very end do we realise we made some of the biggest choices in our lives without really knowing what we were doing. Andrew Panton directs this piece with aplomb – the young cast from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland are perfectly ‘present’ throughout this hour. And if you don’t see all you want to on your visit to the show, you can book again at a discounted rate. I’ll be back…!
