The Southwark Playhouse run of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years and the Park Theatre transfer of Hope Mill Theatre’s critically-acclaimed production of Rags lead the musical theatre finalists for OffWestEnd’s 2021 Offies Awards.
Jonathan O’Boyle’s actor-musician production of The Last Five Years and Bronagh Lagan’s staging of Rags The Musical lead the list with six nominations each. Other genre finalists include Frances Barber nominated for her performance in Musik at the Leicester Square Theatre and the cast of Pippin at the Garden Theatre at the Eagle.
Unveiling the list of 47 finalists across 16 of the usual 28 Offies categories OffWestEnd director Geoffrey Brown said: “In spite of live theatre being closed for most of 2020, there were still some fantastic shows at the start of the year, and between lockdowns, and OffWestEnd is delighted that we are able to recognise and celebrate the best of this work.”
Set up to celebrate the best of each year’s Off-West End productions, performances and creatives, the winners of the tenth annual Off-West End Theatre Awards will be announced during a special online ceremony on 21 February.
With 12 of the usual awards categories shelved this year due to a shortage of eligible nominees as a result of the theatre closedown, OffWestEnd is recognising the wealth of online shows released during lockdown by launching the OnComm Awards. A further 40 OnComm finalists across at least 10 categories will be announced soon.
The winners of both sets of awards will be revealed along with a number of special awards on 21 February. The ceremony will be broadcast free to all from the Scenesaver platform.
