After months of being closed, Milton Keynes Theatre is back with a bang, kicking off its calendar of shows with the joyous, Rocky Horror Show. Rigorous checks on the door including Covid passports, masks and multiple hand sanitiser stations ensure that the audience is safe and at ease to enjoy a night of fun and frivolity – something that we all deserve and have been so desperate for.

Anyway, enough with the pandemic, on with the show. If you’re in need of an evening that will leave you grinning from ear to ear, then this is the performance for you. With a full auditorium and a big chunk of the audience in costume, the theatre was buzzing in readiness. Having never seen The Rocky Horror Show before, I was unsure of what to expect but what a delight it was. The enigmatic crowd enhanced the performance with audience participation and dancing in the aisles encouraged.

Led by Stephen Webb, Ore Oduba and Philip Franks, the cast superbly brings ‘the legendary rock ’n’ roll musical’ to life. Dominating the stage as Frank-N-Furter, the ‘Transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania’, Webb mesmerises the audience with his voice, jokes and swagger. He is shortly followed by my star of the show, Franks as the Narrator, so quick to react to the crowd’s jibes that it produces laughter that is hard to control.

Haley Flaherty as Janet and Oduba as Brad, along with a tight, together ensemble, create a seamless performance, with not a step, dance move or note out of place. Enriched by an extravagant set, flamboyant costumes and a faultless band, Rocky Horror is an upbeat, raucous and wild night of entertainment. Absolute pure joy from start to end, and a pleasure to see such a supportive crowd willing the cast on after a terrible time for the industry. My musical theatre void has well and truly been filled!
