There’s a Cole Porter treat awaiting lovers of musical theatre thinking of going to Paris over Christmas and New Year in the shape of a 105-minute revue at the famous Theatre du Chatelet.
No full-scale American musical like Singin’ in the Rain (a festive favourite with the French) this year but a confection called Cole Porter in Paris which runs from 11 December 2021 to 1 January 2022. And why not since Gay Paree was a regular haunt of the great American composer, one whose best-known numbers was ‘I Love Paris’?
His 1953 Broadway musical Can-Can revolved around the Montmartre dance halls of the 1890s and sophisticated Porter compositions with a Gallic flavour likely to get an airing include ‘Ça, C’est L’amour’, ‘C’est Magnifique’ and ‘Paris Loves Lovers’.
The revue, conceived and directed by Christophe Mirambeau for Les Frivolités Parisiennes, is backed by an orchestra of 14 with choreography by Caroline Roelands.
The songs are in English, the dialogue in French accompanied by surtitles in both languages.
