Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story continues at C until 25 August.
This is a dark tale. Based on the true story of two law students in Chicago in the 1920s, the piece explores, in flashback, the psychology and the relationship between Nathan Leopold (Danny Colligan) and Richard Loeb (Jo Parsons). The thrills these two young men seek are not solely sexual: they get a buzz from setting warehouses alight, graduating to burglary, and finally creating what they believe to be the perfect murder.
This outline of the plot is more or less the story as we open: the show itself reveals some of the whys and hows of this unique relationship. Almost sung-through (the book, music and lyrics are by Stephen Dolginoff), the direction both theatrically and musically hits the balance perfectly between the tension and the ecstasy of Leopold and Loeb’s relationship. Director Guy Retallack and musical director Tom Turner ought to be congratulated on a fine piece of work.
Both actors have been cast perfectly – the voices and the demeanour of each character is pitch-perfect. This is a first class, stylish and compelling musical and detail is paid to the period, both in terms of design and delivery. Audiences are palpably captivated and the twists are delivered with astonishing clarity. No wonder many are returning to see Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story time and time again. A superb production that will haunt you for some time afterwards.
