The Gardening Club is a new pop-rock musical, first seen at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last August, and now being launched as part of Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre’s Premieres season this autumn.
The musical is based in 1960s Georgia where five women form a secret drug ring to distribute the birth control pill illegally, using a gardening club as a cover-up. A fiery journalist, a boisterous nurse, a mysteriously troubled girl next door and the pastor’s daughters join forces to do whatever it takes to help the women of Savannah.
With an explosive soundtrack, The Gardening Club tells an emotional story of self-discovery, sexual taboos, first times, and even harder pills to swallow. It explores the worlds of healthcare, identity, transparency and gender inequality in the 1960s, issues still relevant today.
Written by Carleigh McRitchie and Bella Wright, it will play at Wimbledon Studio from 18-27 September 2025.
Premieres is a season of plays and musicals that promotes new writing. The authors are two LIPA (Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts) Songwriting and Performance students whose main influence was Sara Bareilles’ hit musical Waitress, recently added to the National Theatre at Home menu where the wonderful The Little Big Things also resides.
