Stephen Spielberg’s re-working of Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise’s classic West Side Story was named Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) at the weekend’s Golden Globe Awards.
Recently released in cinemas, the musical was one of the big winners at the low-key, not so glittering event winning a trio of awards including a Best Actress award for Spielberg’s Maria, newcomer Rachel Zegler, who at 20 years old became the youngest winner in the category and the first actress of Colombian descent and the first Latina to win the award.
The musical’s third award went to Broadway actress and singer Ariana DeBose who was warded the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her performance as Anita.
Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Garfield was among the British winners, taking home the prize for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his performance in Lin-Manuela Miranda’s feature directorial debut, the movie version of tick, tick…BOOM!, the autobiographical rock musical that traces Jonathan Larson’s creation of his multi-award-winning Rent.
Miranda also provided the songs for the winner in the Best Animated Film category, Disney’s Encanto which was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard.
