Broadcasting legend Trevor McDonald will feature as the pre-recorded Newscaster when Chess the Musical in Concert plays its eagerly anticipated performances at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London on 1 and 2 August 2022.
The addition of McDonald to the previously announced cast was accompanied by the news that one of the stars of the concert production, Joel Harper-Jackson, will also step into the role of Charlie Price in the second concert in the series Kinky Boots the Musical in Concert. Harper-Jackson will return to the role he previously played on tour in 2019 following the departure of the original Charlie, Matt Willis, due to scheduling conflicts.
Commenting on his Kinky Boots encore, Harper-Jackson said: “I’m so chuffed to step back into the role of Charlie Price for the concerts at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane this August. I was already honoured to be appearing in Chess, however getting the chance to revisit Charlie again in Kinky Boots is really exciting as it’s a show I hold very close to my heart and I can’t wait to dust off my heels!”
The producers of the concert trilogy also announced the inclusion of poet and activist Debris Stevenson in the cast of the final concert, Treason The Musical.
A member of the creative team behind the new Gunpowder Plot-inspired musical drama, and the creator of the semi-autobiographical grime musical Poet on da Corner, has worked with the writers Ricky Allan and Kieran Lynn to develop sections of the show for the concert and will take on the role of narrator.
Produced by Carter Dixon McGill Productions, Piers Cottee-Jones Entertainment and Katy Galloway Productions, Chess The Musical is the first of three concerts featuring West End stars accompanied by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra due to be presented in August at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The multi-award-winning Kinky Boots will follow on 8 and 9 August, with Treason The Musical on 22 and 23 August.
