Award-winning producer Jack Maple will present the UK professional premiere of the stage musical adaptation of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame in London this summer.
Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, the two concert performances at the Prince Edward Theatre on 17 August will feature a cast of West End stars. The creative team will also include Olivier Award-winning arranger, musical director, supervisor and orchestrator Alan Williams.
Based on the 1996 animated film which featured music by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was first seen in a German language production Berlin in 1999 where it ran for over 1,200 performances and was seen by 1.4 million people.
In 2014, a new version premiered in San Diego with a new book by Peter Parnell and additional songs written specifically for the stage adaptation by Menken and Schwartz. The 2014 version has been staged in multiple US regional theatres across the US and has also been seen in Japan, Germany and Australia.
The musical was first seen in the UK in 2019 at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, while in 2021 the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) staged the first production of the show in England at Manchester Cathedral.
