Award-winning actress and recording artist Vanessa Williams is heading back into the world of high fashion by playing boss-from-hell Miranda Priestly in the eagerly anticipated new stage musical version of The Devil Wears Prada.
The actress who played scheming magazine creative director Wilhelmina Slater in the hit series Ugly Betty will bring the Fashion Queen and Editor-in-Chief of Runaway Magazine to life on the UK stage in the production which will play a preview season in Plymouth this summer before opening in London’s West End in October.
Commenting on her latest role, the star whose London theatre debut in the West End transfer of Donmar Warehouse’s revival of City of Angels was cut short by Covid said: “Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks.”
Featuring an original score by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Elton John (Billy Elliot: The Musical, The Lion King), lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub (Suffs), and a book by Kate Wetherhead (Ever After, Submissions Only), the musical version of Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel will be directed and choreographed by triple Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (La Cage aux Folles, Kinky Boots).
The high-powered creative team also includes set designer Tim Hatley (Life of Pi, Back to the Future), costume designer Gregg Barnes (Some Like It Hot, Legally Blonde), lighting designer Bruno Poet (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, Frankenstein) and sound designer Gareth Owen (Come From Away, & Juliet), with casting by Jill Green.
The Devil Wears Prada – The Musical will play its preview season at the Theatre Royal Plymouth from 9 July until 17 August before arriving at the Dominion Theatre in London with performances beginning on 24 October.
Based on Weisberger’s 2003 book and the 2006 Twentieth Century Fox film which starred Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestly, the musical previously played a development run in Chicago in 2022.
The Devil Wears Prada is produced by Tony Award winner Kevin McCollum (In The Heights, Avenue Q, Rent, Six and Mrs Doubtfire), Rocket Entertainment/David Furnish (Tammy Faye, Billy Elliot: The Musical) and Jamie Wilson (Mrs Doubtfire, Ain’t Too Proud, Sister Act The Musical) and presented by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical.
