Led by Megan O’Hara – an excellent Wallis Simpson – this is the story of Edward and Mrs Simpson from a slightly novel point of view that has more to say about how word is spread and the hidden characters behind the headlines. Playing Ernest Simpson, Simon Pavelich gives a well-rounded performance, topped by his solo number which is touchingly endearing and rather humorous all at once.
Focusing on communication links and ‘society circles’, Wallis and David are all but thrown together. Her calm assertion: “I was just an ordinary woman” is miles away from the impression made to all and sundry at a weekend in the country. The host, the Prince of Wales, is smitten. Rhys Anderson plays Edward with an assured tone, his clipped accent well observed and carried forward into his singing.
The show is packed with songs – often very good songs. The duet between Wallis and Edward celebrating the ring he gives her with their entwined initials is truly delightful. Wonderful harmonies in the chorus numbers are well blended and director Joanna Harte uses the somewhat limited stage space very well indeed.
The pace moves along briskly, beautifully supported by the ensemble and a sprinkling of cameo characters. A bit of attention to some of the finer details – particularly Edward’s wardrobe (he is well-known for his sartorial elegance) – and finding a few moments of stillness will refine this show as it continues its run. Wallis herself is immaculately poised – a very convincing portrayal. Congratulations to Bramwellbrand Productions.
