Sequin-spangled fundraiser West End Eurovision will return to the heart of London’s theatreland for the first time in four years next month.
Inspired by the annual song contest, the show which raises funds for Make A Difference Trust, the UK-based charity involved in the fight against HIV and AIDS both at home and overseas, will feature the casts of some of the West End’s biggest shows battling it out to be crowned West End Eurovision’s winning entries.
The event at the Shaftesbury Theatre on Sunday 22 April will feature eight shows competing for three trophies – The Champions, The Best Ident Movie and The Best Creative.
With a special guest performance form a previous Eurovision entrant, West End Eurovision 2018 will feature teams from 42nd Street, Aladdin, Dreamgirls, Hamilton, Kinky Boots, Mamma Mia!, The Phantom of the Opera and Young Frankenstein.
Produced by TheatreMAD, the event offers a taste of Eurovision entertainment ahead of the 63rd edition of the annual song contest in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday 12 May.
When West End Eurovision was last held in 2014, returning show Mamma Mia!, performing ABBA’s winning ‘Waterloo’ from 1974, shared the top prize with the cast of Les Misérables (featuring a surprise appearance by Cameron Mackintosh on film dressed as an airline pilot) who performed ‘Flying the Flag (For You)’, Scooch’s song, which came 22nd for the UK in 2007.
A spokesman for the Make A Difference Trust, said: “We are grateful to all our talented performers and guests for helping us to make West End Eurovision again. This high camp, fun event will raise such a lot of money for the projects we support. We are thrilled to return West End Eurovision once again to the West End… for one unforgettable performance and one night only!”
