New British musical & Juliet leads the nominations for the 20th annual WhatsOnStage Awards. The show which re-imagines a happy life beyond Romeo for Juliet played out accompanied by some of the biggest pop hits of the last two decades has picked up 13 nominations for the prestigious awards.
With the final stage of voting now open until 27 January 2020, & Juliet’s closest musical theatre rivals are Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s revival of Evita and Hope Mill Theatre’s revival of Mame.
As well as celebrating nominations in creative and production categories, & Juliet is also celebrating nominations for its leading actors Miriam-Teak Lee (Juliet) and Oliver Tompsett (Shakespeare) and supporting cast members Jordan Luke Gage, Cassidy Janson and Melanie La Barrie.
Lee will battle it out for the Best Actress in a Musical Award against Tracie Bennett for Mame, both Waitress’ original and current West End Jenna, Katharine McPhee and Lucie Jones, and Zizi Strallen for Mary Poppins. Tompsett is up against David Hunter for Waitress, Charlie Stemp for Mary Poppins, Dear Evan Hansen’s Sam Tutty and Joseph star Jac Yarrow.
In the Best New Musical category, & Juliet will face off against Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, Only Fools and Horses and WaitressCome From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, Only Fools and Horses and Waitress, while the Best Musical Revival nominees are Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Mame, Mary Poppins and 9 to 5 The Musical.
The nominees were announced by award-winning actor Tyrone Huntley and the winners will be announced at the annual Awards Concert on 1 March 2020 at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
BBC Radio 2 will be the exclusive radio partner for this year’s awards ceremony which will be broadcast live on Radio 2 in a three-hour long special show presented by Ken Bruce and Elaine Paige. The partnership also extends to a special award for the most popular musical currently playing in a West End theatre for at least 12 months by the time the voting closes on 27 January 2020. The nominees for the Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical are: The Book of Mormon, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Hamilton, Les Misérables, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Matilda The Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, School of Rock The Musical, Six, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Thriller Live and Wicked.
