The movie version of West End and Broadway mega-hit Wicked took home the second Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement at the weekend’s star-studded ceremony.
First awarded last year, when blockbuster Barbie took the prize, the award was established by the Golden Globes’ new organising body, Dick Clark Productions to recognise ‘the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence’.
Director Jon M Chu said in his acceptance speech: “It shows us how important making this stuff is – in a time when pessimism and cynicism sort of rule the planet right now – that we can still make art that is a radical act of optimism.”
The film’s stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both missed out in the acting categories with Erivo losing out to Demi Moore (for The Substance) in the best Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) category while Grande lost out to Zoe Saldaña who took home the Best Performance By An Actress in a Supporting Role for Emilia Pérez. The film itself also lost out to Emilia Pérez in the Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy category.
