Divorced, beheaded, live… SiX pulls Henry VIII’s unfortunate wives into the 21st century to create the ultimate regal girl group, embarking on a world tour.
As the show unfolds, each Tudor Queen makes a case for being the worst treated wife via the means of a punchy pop song.
The cast is made up of six, feisty females who gel together as a slick girl band while ripping their historical textbook characters off the pages in their solo numbers.
Jamie Armitage’s direction has each Queen snapping, strutting and slamming their former husband with a script so quick-witted poor Henry would turn in his grave.
Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, SiX is the hidden gem of the Fringe and is completely innovative.
With an original score as brilliant at this one, it is hard not to predict a bright future for Marlow and Moss as a writing duo. The show is also bursting with sharp, snappy choreography only fit for a Queen.
Matilda Wickham, Holly Musgrave, Ashleigh Weir, Shimali de Silva, Annabel Marlow and Megan Gilbert do a tremendous job of bringing these powerful women to life, and by the end of the opening number it is impossible not to have fallen in love.
Agnes Cameron’s costume design is as striking as it is fresh and perfectly reflects each Queen’s individuality in the 21st century.
SiX is the fiercely revamped, musical history lesson I never knew I craved and a Fringe must-see.
