Another Sunday night brings another West End On Sea event at Proud Cabaret City. Hilarious impressionist Jess Robinson does a phenomenal job yet again as the evening’s compere. On the bill are the beautiful and talented Katie Paine, plus the outrageously funny Sooz Kempner and her alter ego Nancy Spratt. It only seems fitting that for this year’s Mothering Sunday, the headline act is Daniel Boys, as he is definitely the kind of guy you would happily introduce to your mother.

If you looked up ‘natural born entertainer’, Jess Robinson is what you would find. She has an effortless rapport with the audience and interacts with everyone. Thanks to her, you can hear your favourite stars performs some unlikely song choices; Marylin Monroe sings Lady Gaga’s Poker Face, Shirley Bassy sings ‘Ace of Spades’ and Lily Allen gives us a version of ‘Wonderwall’.

First the stunning Katie Paine takes to the stage. Starting with ‘Look At Me Now’ from The Wild Party, her programme is anything but predictable and obviously well-chosen for her given audience. Every song is an absolute sensation – next time, it would be nice to see her have some more stage time.

Next up is Sooz Kempner or her character Nancy Spratt. Nancy is 1,000 years old and a theatre veteran who loves to name drop. This comedy stand-up ends with a song that more or less sums up the character; an egotistical, self-involved yet hysterical persona.

The set-up feels a little ‘bitty’, as the first two performers are not on for very long before another interval. The arrangement works better with a soloist or duo and only one interval halfway through.

I believe that when the audience spends most of the night on their feet, you can call the show a success. In that case, headliner Daniel Boys has a exceptional evening. Boys takes the audience on a journey of some of his film favourites such as James Bond, The Wizard of Oz and some Disney favourites. Always a crowd pleaser, he presents the crowd with an incredibly well received rendition of ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen and gives Spiderman jazz hands. It is a thoroughly enjoyable night. After all, who doesn’t like a night out at the movies?
