Casting has been announced for the European premiere of Tony-nominated Broadway musical Little Women, the final production in the second season of shows from the partnership between Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre and London arts producer Aria Entertainment.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 novel, the show which has a book by Allan Knee, with lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and music by Jason Howland, is due to play the distinctive Ancoats’ venue from 9 November to 9 December.
The March sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy, will be played by Amie Giselle-Ward (Guys and Dolls, Catch Me If You Can, Cabaret); Jemima Watling (The Tempest, Anthony and Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet); Cathy Read (Bumblescratch, Eugenius, Big Fish); and Katie Marie-Carter (White Christmas, Oklahoma!, Annie Get Your Gun).

The cast also includes: Johan Munir (My Dad’s Gap Year, Othello) as Prof Bhaer, Virge Gilchrist as Aunt March (Brexit The Musical, Lost Love Letters); Joel Harper-Jackson as John Brooke ( Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita); Connor Hughes as Laurie (Titanic The Musical, Some Enchanted Evening); Tony Stansfield as Mr Laurence (Dirty Dancing, West Side Story); and Anna Stolli as Marmee (Mamma Mia!, The King and I).
Co-produced by Knockhardy Productions, Little Women will be directed by Bronagh Langan and choreographed by Iona Holland with design by Nik Corall and lighting design by Ben M Rogers.
Commenting on the casting for the project, Hope Mill’s Joseph Houston said: “We were overwhelmed with the level of talent and quality of the actors at the auditions for Little Women. We are thrilled to announce our 10-strong cast who are excited at the prospect of bringing Little Women to the Hope Mill Theatre stage – a premiere not only for Manchester but also for Europe. The team cannot wait to start rehearsals and bring the show to life.”
The brainchild of Houston and William Whelton, the 120-seat Hope Mill Theatre in the Ancoats area of Manchester opened in December 2015 and is part of a converted Grade II listed former cotton mill that also houses studios for writers, artists and designers; an events space; and a café and bar.
