The Union Theatre will present Peter Nichols’ Oliver Award-winning play Privates On Parade (with music by Denis King), directed by Kirk Jameson and starring Simon Green from 22 November to 16 December.
Set during the Malayan Emergency of the late 1940s, the play follow the exploits of a song and dance unit during their tour of South East Asia as they provide light entertainment for the British Army.
Private Steve Flowers is posted to join the small show, which is conceived by, and stars, the flamboyant Captain Terri Dennis who’s cross dressing antics are the talk of the barracks.
Originally produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, this revised and rewritten version was first presented at the Donmar and is now staged by Jameson, who returns to the Union Theatre having most recently directed the venue’s production of Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun.
Jameson will be reunited with Green who will play the role of Captain Terri Dennis. The pair last worked together on And the World Goes Round which played at the Union’s original address in 2014.
Green’s stage career spans an impressive 30 years with recent credits including Lord Cromer in Mrs Henderson Presents (Toronto), Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the of the Desert (national tour) and Monsieur Andre in the 25th anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera (national tour).
The actor comes to the Union Theatre fresh from his one-man show Life is For Living which played to sell-out audiences in New York. The production won the 2017 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revue and will play Live At Zédel in London this November.
Green is joined by Sam Curry who plays the role of Private Steven Flowers. Previous credits include Jamie in The D List (Underbelly, Edinburgh Festival Fringe); Brutus in Julius Caesar (Network Theatre) and Hamnet in Cesario (National Theatre).
Privates On Parade will be designed by Mike Lees, with musical supervision by Nick Barstow. Full casting is to be announced.
