New Zealand comedian Penny Ashton has begun a two-month UK and Ireland tour of her Jane Austen-inspired new musical Promise and Promiscuity.
A multi award-winner with more than 500 solo shows to her credit, Ashton is due to take her inventive one-woman show to venues across the UK, culminating in an appearance at the Old Laundry Theatre in Windermere on 15 November.
Described as a mix of ‘song, dance and appalling cross-stitching’, the show features a full cast of Austenesque characters in a tale of Miss Elspeth, a woman who battles ‘literary snobbery, cousin Horatio’s digestions and her mother’s nerves’ armed only with a ‘blushing countenance and excellent ukulele skills’.
The tour which begins today (10 October) in Milton Keynes, will visit London, Winchester, Fareham, New Milton and Canterbury in the UK, and Tralee, Killmallock, Limerick and Nenagh in the Republic of Ireland.
An established comedy star in New Zealand, Ashton has represented New Zealand in Theatresports and Performance Poetry and has performed by invitation at the Glastonbury Festival and Jane Austen Festival in Bath. She is also a regular and original panellist on Radio New Zealand National’s The Panel.
