A musical version of David Walliams’ best-selling Billionaire Boy looks set to be one of the highlights of Nuffield Southampton Theatres’ 2018 season.
Announced as part of a season that includes inaugural programming for NST’s newly-built city centre theatre NST City, Billionaire Boy features music and lyrics by chart-topping song writer Miranda Cooper. Directed by Luke Sheppard, the world premiere of the show will run from 19 November 2018 until 6 January 2019, with a press night on 28 November.
NST’s diverse 2018 programme also includes a workshop production of Son of Rambow The Musical, produced in association with The Other Palace. Based on the cult family film, the musical Son of Rambow will also involve Cooper who provides the music, along with her regular songwriting partner Nick Coler, and the lyrics with the writer of the book – playwright and performer Richard Marsh.
Directed by Nuffield Theatres’ Samuel Hodges, the work-in-progress production will play London’s Other Palace as part of the venue’s popular development programme from 22 May until 2 June.
Unveiling the new season, which will include four world premiere productions including Billionaire Boy, the director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Samuel Hodges, said: “Next year is an exciting year for the theatre as we open Southampton’s brand new city centre theatre, NST City, a second venue to build on the success of NST Campus. I am very proud of our inaugural season that features four world premieres, international collaborations, both new talent and household names, untold local stories of national significance, and a brand new programme of studio theatre, music, comedy, film, circus and dance across our two venues.”
Also included in the announcement were details of two new associates, star choreographer Drew McOnie who joins NST as a dance associate, and Nigerian poet Inua Ellams as poetry and spoken word associate.
NST is also launching a new pop-up music collective, The Space Between Collective, to accompany leading rock and pop acts from around the country. The opening Space Between concert will feature the rock group Band of Skulls.
Following the appointment of Annelie Powell as head of casting, the NST is intending to establish a pool of local professional actors by holding auditions for performers who currently live in the postcode areas of SO, PO and BH. NST will also be interested to hear from professional actors who are originally from the area but no longer live locally. Full details will be available on the website in mid-December.
