Philip Rham plays Captain EJ Smith in the forthcoming production of Titanic at the Southwark Playhouse
Casting has been announced for the European premiere of a new chamber version of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Titanic. Directed by Thom Southerland and produced by Danielle Tarento, the production of Maury Yeston and Peter Stone’s show will run for a six-week season at Southwark Playhouse from 26th July-31st August.
The loss of the RMS Titanic on 14th April, 1912 was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th century. Based on actual characters aboard the ‘greatest ship in the world’, Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel) and Stone’s stunning musical focuses on their hopes and aspirations.
The cast includes Philip Rham – who appeared in the same creative team’s production of the musical Parade at the Southwark Playhouse – as Titanic Captain EJ Smith and Simon Green (recent roles include M Andre in the UK tour of The Phantom of the Opera) playing J Bruce Ismay, director of the WhiteStar Line.
Greg Castiglioni (Company at Southwark Playhouse and Magaldi in Michael Grandage’s West End staging of Evita) is Thomas Andrews, the ship’s architect, and Celia Graham (Christine in both Phantom and its sequel Love Never Dies) is 2nd Class passenger Alice Beane, from America.
Also in the ensemble are: James Austen-Murray, Dominic Brewer, Scarlett Courtney, Matthew Crowe, Jonathan David Dudley, Grace Eccle, Oliver Hembrough, James Hume, Sion Lloyd, Claire Marlowe, Shane McDaid, Leo Miles, Nadim Naaman and Victoria Serra.
Titanic won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
Director Thom Southerland was longlisted Best Newcomer in the 2011 Evening Standard Awards for Parade. He was named Best Director at the 2011 The Offies – Off West End Theatre Awards – for Me and Juliet at the Finborough.
Titanic is produced by Danielle Tarento (winner Best Producer at the 2012 Offies). She also produced Victor/Victoria, Mack & Mabel, Parade and Company at Southwark Playhouse; Taboo (Brixton Clubhouse); The Pitchfork Disney (Arcola); Burlesque, Drowning on Dry Land (Jermyn Street) and Noel and Gertie (Cockpit). She is co-founder of the Menier Chocolate Factory and co-produced all in-house shows 2004-2006, including Sunday in the Park With George which received a West End transfer and five Olivier awards.
