Jonathan Bailey, Alex Gaumond and Daisy Maywood will complete the cast for Marianne Elliott’s eagerly-anticipated gender-swapped version of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Company.

Bailey (American Psycho, Almeida, Othello, National Theatre) will play the re-gender-switched role of Jamie (originally Amy) opposite Gaumond (Matilda, We Will Rock You, West End) who will play his devoted fiancée Paul. Maywood (Promises Promises, Southwark Playhouse, A Chorus Line, London Palladium) will join the cast as Susan.

Commenting on re-imagining of two key characters as a gay couple for the production, Elliott said: I could not be more thrilled that Stephen Sondheim agreed to turn Amy into Jamie. I hope it makes this production feel very, very now.

“We are keeping the existing dialogue, and not changing the famous scene in which the character gets cold feet about their impending marriage and sings the iconic ‘Not Getting Married Today’. The characters of Jamie and Paul feel like a lot of the contemporary gay male friends I know.”

The complete cast for the production which will begin previewing at the Gielgud Theatre on 26 September 2018 is: Rosalie Craig as Bobbie, Patti LuPone as Joanne, Mel Giedroyc as Sarah, Jonathan Bailey as Jamie, George Blagden as PJ, Ashley Campbell as Peter, Richard Fleeshman as Andy, Alex Gaumond as Paul, Richard Henders as David, Ben Lewis as Larry, Daisy Maywood as Susan, Jennifer Saayeng as Jenny, Matthew Seadon-Young as Theo and Gavin Spokes as Harry. Joining them are: Michael Colbourne, Francesca Ellis, Ewan Gillies, Grant Neal and Jaimie Pruden.

Presented by Elliott & Harper Productions, the latest ground-breaking production from the company’s award-winning artistic director Elliott is due to celebrate its opening night on 17 October.

Elliott heads a creative team consisting of choreographer Liam Steel, musical supervisor and conductor Joel Fram, designer Bunny Christie, lighting designer Neil Austin, sound designer Ian Dickinson (for Autograph Sound), illusions designer Chris Fisher, orchestrator David Cullen, dance arranger Sam Davis and casting directors Alastair Coomer and Charlotte Sutton.

Debuting on Broadway in 1970, Company boasts the timeless music and lyrics of Sondheim and a book by Furth. Featuring classic Sondheim songs ‘Being Alive’ and ‘Marry Me a Little’, the original production was nominated for an incredible 14 Tony Awards, winning six including Best Musical.
