Television personality Caroline Flack will be the new Roxie Hart in the hit revival of Chicago at London’s Phoenix Theatre from 10 December 2018.
Love Island presenter Flack, the latest TV regular to take the trip to the West End stage via Strictly Come Dancing, will take over from the production’s original Roxie Hart, Sarah Soetaert, who will give her last performance in the role on 8 December.
Confirming her arrival in the show, Flack said: “I’ve been imagining playing Roxie since I was a teenager. To have now landed the role in the West End is a dream come true. I hope I do everyone proud and don’t fall off the ladder!”
Flack, who will stay with the show until its final date on 5 January 2019, will join RuPaul’s Drag Race star Todrick Hall who became the latest Billy Flynn in November alongside Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly, Mazz Murray as Mama Morton and Paul Rider and as Amos Hart.
Following on from a successful UK and international tour and after a five and a half year absence from London, the new production is based on the 1996 Broadway revival directed by Walter Bobbie with choreography by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler.
Based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, Chicago has a book by Fred Ebb and Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The musical opened at the Adelphi Theatre in London on 18 November 1997 to rave reviews and ran for 15 highly successful years in the West End.
The production claimed the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production and the 1998 Critics Circle Drama Award for Best Musical. Chicago is currently playing in New York where it recently celebrated its 21st birthday. The show is now the world’s longest-running American musical.
