Casting has been announced for the first London revival of Ain’t Misbehavin’ in almost 25 years which is due to arrive at the Southwark Playhouse in April following its premiere run at the Mercury Theatre Colchester.
Presented by Paul Taylor-Mills and the Mercury Theatre Colchester in association with the Tamasha Theatre Company, the production will debut at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre from 15 to 30 March 2019 before playing the Southwark Playhouse from 19 April until 1 June.
The cast will feature: Adrian Hansel (Hairspray, West End, Five Guys Named Moe, Marble Arch Theatre), Renée Lamb (Little Shop of Horrors, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Six, Arts Theatre), Carly Mercedes-Dyer (Dreamgirls, Savoy Theatre, The Lorax The Old Vic), Landi Oshinowo (Big Fish at The Other Palace, Shrek the Musical, West End) and Wayne Robinson (In The Heights, Southwark Playhouse, Bat Out of Hell, West End).
As previously announced, award-winning actor Tyrone Huntley (Jesus Christ Superstar, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) will be making his directorial debut with the new production heading a creative team that includes high-profile Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse. The eight-time South African Latin American champion who is currently featuring in the BBC’s latest prime-time talent show, The Greatest Dancer, will maker her debut as theatre choreographer for the show.
The creative team also includes designer Takis, lighting designer James Whiteside, sound designer Dan Samson and associate choreographer James Bennett. The production will feature new orchestrations by Mark Dickman, and casting is by Will Burton CDG.
Featuring the music of jazz great Fats Waller and celebrating the vibrancy of the club scene in 1920s Harlem, Ain’t Misbehavin’ premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1978 before transferring to Broadway a few months later.
Based on an idea by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr, with orchestrations and arrangements by Luther Henderson, vocal and musical concepts by Jeffrey Gutcheon and vocal arrangements by Gutcheon and William Elliott, the musical revue won the Tony Award for Best Musical.
The original West End production opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre a year later and was followed by a revival at the Tricycle Theatre and the Lyric Theatre in 1995.
