Young people took centre stage at the eighth edition of The Mousetrap Awards, the UK’s only theatre awards run by and for young people, at a packed Charing Cross Theatre.
Presented by Mousetrap Theatre Projects’ Youth Forum, the lively event opened with a welcome speech by the current star of hit show Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Mousetrap Award-winner Layton Williams and closed by Mousetrap Theatre Projects’ patron, Broadway and West End star Asmeret Ghebremichael.
The Musical Theatre Review-sponsored Sing Your Heart Out Award was first up with our own editor Lisa Martland presenting the award to Hamilton himself, leading man Jamael Westman, who collected the award on behalf of the smash-hit show.
Over 3,000 young people cast their votes for the 14 awards presented at the event, with winners including Les Misérables, which was judged to be the ‘Show Still Smashing It’ and Heathers The Musical, which was chosen as the show most voters wanted to be brought back.
The youngest winners, ‘the Summers’ from School of Rock, Amelie Green, Anya Hewett and Eibhleann Rose McCormack, collected their Big Star Little Star Award with a little help from Dewey Finn in the shape of Jake Sharp.

Presented in front of an audience packed with young theatre-lovers, West End favourites and industry experts, the event was hosted, stage managed and organised by members of the Youth Forum with the support of project manager Gemma Bell.
The ceremony also featured individual guest performances from young artists Brady Isaacs Pearce, Alfie Neill, Laura Messin, Mia-Daliya Cunningham, Jade Stanger and Andrew Self.
Mousetrap Theatre Projects is a theatre education charity dedicated to bringing the magic of theatre into the lives of young people. It opens the doors to all that London’s vibrant theatre scene has to offer – particularly for young people with limited means, support or special needs – and encourages participants to engage creatively with their theatre experiences.
The Mousetraps are supported by The Society of London Theatre through funding from the Theatre Development Trust.
