I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical continues at Underbelly Bristo Square – The Diary Room, Edinburgh until 26 August 2019.

‘Borrowing’ from practically every overture written for the stage, this is a tongue-in-cheek revue show featuring four vocalists and Alexander S Bermange at the keyboard. No mere accompanist, he’s rather a character and very engaging.
This cabaret sends up a range of performing stereotypes from the eager beginner to the duettists who loathe each other with a diva or two along the way.
Confined in a postage-stamp stage any choreography is somewhat compromised, but this could have been made into an ‘asset’ of sorts for comedic effect. The laughs are many and broad, from recognising the musicals being parodied to the often witty lyrics.
The highlight comes in the number ‘When a Fan Loves a Woman’ with the strong interplay between James Hume and Charlotte O’Rourke. Charlotte Anne Steen is a rather convincing diva and Felix Mosse conveys the agony of being the understudy… forever!
This company is very talented and could have perhaps pushed for something a bit less predictable and more adventurous. An enjoyable hour of send-up cabaret.
