Oscar-winning directors Sam Mendes and Steve McQueen, choreographer and director David Bintley, playwright Christopher Hampton, Olivia Newton-John and Elton John are among the famous names from the entertainment world celebrating their inclusion in this New Year Honours list.
Mendes, McQueen, Bintley and Hampton all receive knighthoods while Newton-John becomes a Dame in recognition of her work as a cancer charity campaigner. Elton John, who was knighted in 1998, has been made a member of the elite Order of the Companions of Honour.
Already a Lib Dem peer, former children’s TV presenter Floella Benjamin becomes a Dame in recognition of her services to charity while choreographer and director Stephen Mear, much-loved TV actors Wendy Craig and Rudolph Walker, and Peaky Blinders writer Stephen Knight are among the CBE recipients from the arts and entertainment sector.
The second female president of Equity, actress Maureen Beattie, and choreographer Kate Flatt are among those honoured with OBEs. MBE recipients include stage and screen favourite Derek Griffiths; Hamilton’s award-winning Aaron Burr, Giles Terera; theatre director Roy Alexander Weise; the former director of Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre, Mark Everett; and joint artistic directors of Paines Plough, James Grieve and George Perrin.
