With this summer’s West End LIVE event postponed until further notice as the country battles the Covid-19 Sky has joined forces with the Society of London Theatre to offer Sky customers a stay at home version of the popular summer event.
From 21 May 2020 Sky VIPs will be able to enjoy a weekly performance from the stars of some of the West End’s favourite shows. Featuring six of the West End’s most popular shows including & Juliet, Six and Mamma Mia! Virtual West End Live will offer home-bound theatre fans a taste of the West End LIVE experience.
A partnership between the Society of London Theatre and Sky VIP, Virtual West End Live will offer Sky VIPs access to a new performance each week via a secure link. The specially recorded performances will feature one or more cast members from a hit show performing from their home and chatting and answering questions (submitted by Sky VIPs) about their show.
The Society of London Theatre also confirmed that West End LIVE would be celebrated on the weekend of 20 and 21 June via the event’s social channels so everyone could be involved and the Sky content that will be for Sky customers in the lead up would also be shared with everyone following the weekend.
All Sky customers can join Sky VIP free of charge via the MySky App. The loyalty programme for Sky customers also offers access to the National Youth Theatre workshops. Aimed at 11-14 year olds the hour-long acting workshops featuring actors and directors from the prestigious National Youth Theatre launched this week.
Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre announced their decision to postpone West End LIVE last month. The event had been due to light up London’s iconic Trafalgar Square on the 20 and 21 June.
The largest event of its type in the world, the festival annually turns one of the capital’s famous landmarks into a showcase for the best the West End has to offer. Alongside the performances the event offers fun photo opportunities, meet-and-greets, merchandise stalls, refreshments and sing-alongs.
In a statement thanking theatre-lovers for their ongoing support, the organisers promised that “when the coronavirus pandemic lifts and London revives, West End LIVE will have an even more important role to play as a curtain raiser to the best of our fantastic West End. We look forward to being back bigger and better than ever before and as soon as we have dates to announce, you will be the first to know.”
