Netflix has released a teaser trailer and artwork for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut, the movie version of tick, tick…BOOM!, the autobiographical rock musical that traces Jonathan Larson’s creation of his multi-award-winning Rent.
Starring Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Garfield (Angels in America, West End and Broadway), the film will be launched on Netflix and in selected cinemas in the autumn.
First performed Off-Off-Broadway in 1990 as a solo workshop show by Larson entitled Boho Days, the writer changed the title to tick, tick…BOOM! before performing it at various New York venues in the early 1990s.
Larson performed the piece as a rock monologue but after his death in 1996 his college friend and producer Victoria Leacock asked Pulitzer Prize-winning David Auburn (Proof) to reconfigure the show. With the monologue transformed into a three-actor musical with one actor playing Jon and the other two playing Michael and Susan as well as the seven other characters, the revised version of the show premiered Off-Broadway in 2001.
Produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard for Imagine Entertainment, Julie Oh and Miranda, the Hamilton creator’s first film as director also stars actress and singer Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), Tony Award nominees Robin de Jesús (Wicked, Broadway) and Joshua Henry (The Scottsboro Boys, Broadway), MJ Rodriguez (Rent, Off-Broadway), double Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Tariq Trotter (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), double Tony Award winner Judith Light (The Assembled Parties, Broadway), and pop singer and actress Vanessa Hudgens (Gigi, Broadway).
The screen version of Larson’s musical has been written by Tony Award winning playwright Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) and features choreography by award winning music video choreographer Ryan Heffington.
