The legendary Les Misérables is back at Milton Keynes Theatre with all the drama, emotion and impact you’d expect from this phenomenal show. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Cameron Mackintosh’s production combines spectacular staging, impeccable performances and a stunning orchestral score, all guaranteed to capture your attention from beginning to end.

It’s easy to see why Les Misérables has a massive following, but for those lucky audience members that are discovering the show for for the first time there is no need to be fearful of its complexity; even without prior research, whether you’re young or old, it’s easy to engage with the compelling narrative.

Set in the early 1800s against a backdrop of the rebellion in Paris, the focus is of course on ex-convict Jean Valjean (played in Milton Keynes by Will Barratt) as we see his journey of redemption from 19 years as a prisoner to wealthy Monsieur Madeleine. The plot requires powerful performances and the current cast doesn’t disappoint.

From main characters to ensemble, every cast member gives their all. I was in awe of their talent, as was the rest of the audience, demonstrated by an enthusiastic standing ovation.

I had goosebumps after Katie Hall’s rendition of Fantine’s ‘I Dreamed a Dreamed’ and was left equally stunned by Nathania Ong’s delivery of Éponine’s heartbreaking ‘On My Own’. Barratt expertly carries the show as the protagonist, Valjean, performing his part with great care, sentiment and gravitas when required, as does Nic Greenshields as Javert.

The incredible set designed by Matt Kinley is epic, transforming the stage from Parisian streets to the barricade wall. I was particularly impressed by the use of projections to bring the sewage scene to life, as well as Javert’s suicide.

The show wouldn’t be what it is without the realistic costumes, hair and make-up. And last but by no means least, under the expert direction of Ben Ferguson, the orchestra delivers a flawless performance which ties the entire show together. Get your tickets now to experience West End standards at the always superb Milton Keynes Theatre.
