Sara Poyzer will return as Donna Sheridan to head the new cast for the multi-award-winning Mamma Mia! as the feel-good musical embarks on the 2023 leg of its UK and international tour.
Poyzer (Assassins, Watermill/Nottingham Playhouse, Billy Elliot the Musical, Victoria Palace) will star alongside Nicky Swift (Shirley Valentine, 30th anniversary UK tour, Footloose UK tour) as Rosie and alternate Donna Sheridan; Sarah Earnshaw (Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, UK tour, April in Paris, UK tour) as Tanya; Richard Standing (Faith Healer, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Macbeth, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre) as Sam Carmichael; Neal Craig (First Touch, Nottingham Playhouse, Peter Pan, Storyhouse Theatre) as Harry Bright; Phil Corbitt (Return to the Forbidden Planet, West End and UK tour, The Secret Agent UK tour) as Bill Austin; Jess Michelmore (One Enchanted Evening, Glastonbury Abbey, Magic at the Musicals, Royal Albert Hall) as Sophie Sheridan; Christopher Foley (Hairspray, Royal Caribbean, 42nd Street, Upstairs at the Gatehouse) as Sky; Tanisha Butterfield (Sister Act The Musical, UK tour, Cinderella, Darlington Hippodrome) as Ali; Freya Humberstone (Spring Awakening, Frogmore Papermill, Sanditon, ITV) as Lisa; Jaden Oshenye (From Here to Eternity, Charing Cross Theatre, The Bodyguard, Dominion Theatre/UK and international tour) as Pepper; Archie Flynn (professional debut) as Eddie and Andrew Bateup (Choir of Man, West End, The Voice UK 2021) as Father Alexander.
Further casting includes Clàudia Bahrani, Alice Baker, Peter Camilleri, Henryk Firth, Andrew Gallo, Claire Greenway, Ashleigh Harvey, Ashleigh Jones, Matt Kennedy, Robert Knight, Grace May, Hollie Nelson, Ashley Rowe, Nathen Scott, Marissa Sims and Lucy Walsham.
The new cast will begin performances at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton on 17 January. The production will then visit venues in Manchester, Cardiff, Blackpool, Leeds, Peterborough, Estonia, Portsmouth, Truro, Scarborough, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Further international dates are to be announced.
Since its premiere in London’s West End in 1999, producer Judy Craymer’s inventive musical inspired by the hits of Swedish supergroup ABBA, has been seen live by over 65 million people in 50 different productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 the show became the first Western musical to be staged in Mandarin in China.
The show originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999, before moving into the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and then reopening in its current London home, the Novello Theatre in 2012. The London production has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.
With music and lyrics by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.
