The venue for the London run of the new production of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage has been changed due to continued delays to the opening of the new Capital Theatre in Westfield.
Originally due to be the first production to grace the stage of the new purpose built 620-seat venue London, the production will now play a limited season at the Prince Edward Theatre instead from January 2027.
In an announcement posted on the show’s website, the producers referred to ‘continuing planning permission delays with Hammersmith and Fulham Borough Council’ resulting in an unavoidable delay. New dates for the Capital Theatre season will be announced once the current local issues are solved.
The changes to the London season will not affect the current UK and Ireland tour. Produced by Karl Sydow in association with Lionsgate Films and Magic Hour Productions, the production launched at Milton Keynes Theatre in the summer and is currently due to run until June 2027.
The production stars Joel Benjamin (Hercules, West End) as Johnny Castle alongside Charlie Varlet in her theatre tour debut as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and The Greatest Dancer season one winner Ellie Fergusson as Penny Johnson.
Written by Eleanor Bergstein, (the scriptwriter of the phenomenally successful 1987 film) the production which is directed by Federico Bellone and choreographed by Austin Wilks, features the much-loved characters and original dialogue from the iconic film, along with extra scenes added for the stage version.
The creative team for the production also includes lighting designer Valerio Tiberi, sound designer Chris Whybrow, supervising musical director Richard John, associate director Juliet Gough, original music supervisor Conrad Helfrich and costume designer Jennifer Irwin, with casting by Harry Blumenau.
