The 2022 Tony Awards nominations, recognising the best and brightest of the 2021-22 Broadway theatre season, have been announced by Adrienne Warren and Joshua Henry and British talents are celebrating.
American shows A Strange Loop (11 nominations), MJ (10) and Paradise Square (10) may lead the pack but they are closely followed by Marianne Elliott’s production of Company (9), Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ Six: The Musical (8) – what a fairy tale success this show has had! – and the Boy Dylan-inspired Girl From the North Country (7). Michael Longhurst’s staging of Caroline, or Change, starring Sharon D Clarke, also receives three nominations.
Marlow and Moss, who created Six while still students at Cambridge, said: “Gosh this is so wild. We created Six as a fun summer project for us and our friends in 2017, thinking that, come the autumn, we’d be moving on with our lives and like becoming lawyers or accountants or something, so for that show to be nominated for a LITERAL Tony Award is just beyond. It’s a truly amazing, baffling, honour to be even considered in the same category as these other wonderful pieces. We are so humbled, grateful, and handsome.
“Lastly, we’d just love to give a major shout out to the American accent. In our own accents (the accent in which this music was originally written), the word ‘category’ is absolutely not stressed like it is, repeatedly, in our show’s final number but having the opportunity to bring the show to Broadway really has allowed that lyric to blossom from noticeably shoddy writing to a seemingly innocuous rhyme. So, thanks America.”
The 75th Annual Tony Awards will be hosted by Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee, Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical) from the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on 12 June 2022.
