A Strange Loop star Kyle Birch dies at the age of 26

It has been announced that performer Kyle Birch (A Strange Loop, The Color Purple, I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire) died on 2 December 2024, aged 26.

Birch was probably best known to musical theatre audiences for covering the lead part of Usher in Michael R Jackson’s award-winning A Strange Loop at London Barbican’s Theatre in 2023, before taking over the role full-time.

He was also cast in the Leicester Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome production of The Color Purple when it toured for the first time across England and Wales in 2022. Other credits included British Theatre Academy’s production of Once On This Island at Southwark Playhouse, the venue to which he returned for I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire earlier this year.

Musical Theatre Review caught an early glance of Birch’s obvious prowess as a musical theatre artist in a show highlighting the talents of recent arts graduates in Graduates at Cadogan Hall in 2021.

Our reviewer wrote: “The final performer of the evening is Kyle Birch, who sings ‘Home’ from The Wiz with an emotional intelligence and delicacy that is usually only found in the most seasoned of performers.”

A statement from Birch’s agents, Russell Smith Associates, released on social media, read: “It is with great sadness that I share this news. I am heartbroken to announce that my dear friend and client, Kyle Birch, passed away on the evening of Monday, December 2, 2024.

“Kyle was a truly remarkable talent, with vocal abilities that could move audiences to tears. His voice wasn’t just beautiful – it was soulful, powerful, and deeply resonant, capable of conveying emotions that stayed with you long after the final note. But beyond his artistry, Kyle was the most tender and lovely man I could ever hope to work with, a gentle and kind-hearted soul whose warmth made every interaction special. I adored him. He had a gorgeous smile that could light up any room, a presence that lifted spirits, and an energy that inspired everyone around him.  

“Kyle’s star shone brightest when he took on the role of Usher in A Strange Loop at the Barbican. As the leading man, he delivered a performance so profound and nuanced that anyone lucky enough to witness it could see just how extraordinary he truly was. Kyle poured his heart into every moment on stage, leaving an indelible mark on all who watched him. He had me roaring with laughter one moment, and then moved to tears the very next second–both with the emotion of his storytelling and the overwhelming feeling of pride.  

“Being his agent was so much more than a job – it was a privilege. Kyle became an integral part of my life, every single day. I saw his face every day, spoke about him every day, and encouraged him to achieve his best every day. I was his biggest champion and his biggest fan, which makes sharing this heartbreaking news all the more difficult. 

“His passing leaves an unfillable void in the lives of all who knew him and in the hearts of those who admired his artistry. Kyle was more than a client or a performer – he was a light in our lives, a cherished friend, and a singular talent. There was only one Kyle. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time.
