Leading theatrical charity Acting for Others have announced the formation of a separate Covid-19 fund to co-ordinate efforts to support those in the arts facing hardship as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
Coinciding with the announcement that next month’s West End Flea Market fundraiser has been postponed, the organisation which will make funds available to its 14 member charities also encouraged theatre-lovers to support the various online events set up in support of theatre workers.
Announcing the new fund, the co-chair of Acting For Others Stephen Waley-Cohen said: “Raising money for our charity at this time is all the more important, given the number of theatre workers in the industry now out of work due to Coronavirus, and we are so grateful to all those fundraising on our behalf.
“While we are disappointed to be postponing West End Flea Market this year, it is necessary in order to protect the welfare of artists, staff, and visitors. We hope that those who are in a position to, might consider supporting some of the tremendous online events organised in support of our theatre colleagues in this time of need. We look forward to welcoming theatre fans and supporters to West End Flea Market again soon.”
The second West End Flea Market was due to take place on 16 May 2020. New dates will be announced when the lockdown ends.
Acting for Others is one of the charitable organisations set to benefit from All The Web’s A Stage, a star-packed online fundraiser featuring live performances across a variety of entertainment genres on Shakespeare Day, 23 April 2020.
Other projects involved in raising funds for theatre and entertainment charities include the Amazon Prime Video screening of Fleabag presented by creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, DryWrite, Soho Theatre and Annapurna Theatre in association with National Theatre Live in London and Amazon Prime Video (available for two weeks from 10 April 2020).
While Acting for Others will receive all proceeds from Danielle Tarento and Paul Wilkins’ invitation to composers to write ‘A Song For Our Time’ to be recorded by a virtual choir.
