AJ Holmes: Yeah, but Not Right Now continues at Underbelly Cowgate – Belly Dancer, Edinburgh until 25 August 2019.
Star rating: three stars ★ ★ ★ ✩ ✩
Actor, writer and composer AJ Holmes is a charming performer. His ease at the piano and guitar are joyous and he sings beautifully. It is a pleasure to hear a musical theatre star talk about musical theatre.
His songs here are contemporary fare in a similar style to Jason Robert Brown, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. He sings one love song he wrote in college which is technically the most fun, mainly for its series of tempo changes and moods.
Holmes’ personal stories are engaging and depict a knowing mixture of selfishness and self-awareness. My favourite was the one about going with his grandmother to see Book of Mormon before he was cast in it in Chicago, London and Broadway. And I joined in with everyone else in the poo song. I could have listened to him for a lot longer…
