The Almeida Theatre’s artistic director Rupert Goold will direct the world premiere of Conor McPherson’s adaptation of Pawel Pawlikowski’s Academy Award-nominated Cold War.
Featuring traditional Polish songs, and stirring choral arrangements from the film, alongside music by multi-award-winning songwriter Elvis Costello, the production will play the London venue from 30 November 2023 until 27 January 2024.
Released in 2018, the epic filmic love story which spans the decades and covers the breadth of a divided Europe, will be brought alive on stage by playwright McPherson (The Girl From The North Country, The Weir) and a cast led by Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Elliot Levey (Cabaret) and Luke Thallon (Patriots).
Announcing the production, Goold said: “When I first saw Paweł Pawlikowski’s film Cold War, I was swept away by its beauty, passion and style. Its theatricality struck me as ripe for a stage adaption. So, I’m incredibly excited to be presenting Conor McPherson’s adaptation, with music by Elvis Costello.”
Presented in association with Tanya Seghatchian and John Woodward, the creative team for the production also includes music supervisor, orchestrator and arranger Simon Hale, choreographer Ellen Kane, set designer Jon Bausor, costume designer Evie Gurney, lighting designer Paule Constable, sound designer Sinéad Diskin, musical director Jo Cichonska and casting director Amy Ball.
Goold also announced cinema audiences across the UK will get the chance to see the Almeida’s acclaimed sold-out production of Spring Awakening on 1 November 2023.
It will be screened at Curzon’s Bloomsbury, Canterbury Westgate, Mayfair, Oxford and Richmond venues and Everyman’s Bristol, Chelmsford, Edinburgh, Harrogate and Newcastle venues.
Spring Awakening boasts a book and lyrics by playwright and lyricist Steven Sater and music composed by singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik. Based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s controversial 19th century play, the original 2006 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. The show’s first West End production in 2009 won four Olivier Awards including Best Musical. The 2021 London revival at the Almeida Theatre was directed by Goold.
