The Almeida Theatre has announced a week-long extension for artistic director Rupert Goold’s acclaimed sold-out production of Spring Awakening.
Originally due to end its run on 22 January, the first London revival of the Broadway hit since the show’s 2009 UK premiere, will now play performances up to 29 January.
The production which opened in November 2021 features Amara Okereke, winner of the 2018 Stage Debut Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Les Misérables, Laurie Kynaston (winner of the 2019 Evening Standard Award for Emerging Talent for The Mother at Kiln Theatre and in the West End), Nathan Armarkwei-Laryea (Hamlet, National Theatre), Asha Banks (The Boy in the Dress, RSC), Taylor Bradshaw (South Pacific, Chichester Festival Theatre), Catherine Cusack (Bingo, Young Vic), Carly-Sophia Davies (Pavilion, Theatr Clwyd), Kit Esuruoso (Love Letters, Queens Theatre), Mark Lockyer (The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Almeida Theatre), Maia Tamrakar (The Lion King, UK tour), Stuart Thompson (A Taste of Honey, National Theatre) and Zheng Xi Yong (Assassins, Watermill Theatre/Nottingham Playhouse). Bella Maclean, Emily Ooi and Joe Pitts have all made their professional stage debuts in the production.
Goold heads a creative team that includes choreographer Lynne Page, designer Miriam Buether, costume designer Nicky Gillibrand, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer Tony Gayle and musical director Jo Cichonska. The orchestration is by Duncan Sheik and Simon Hale.
Spring Awakening boasts a book and lyrics by playwright and lyricist Steven Sater and music composed by singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik. Based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s controversial 19th century play, the original 2006 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. The show’s first West End production in 2009 won four Olivier Awards including Best Musical.
