Yank! star Andy Coxon has been cast in the iconic role of Berger in the eagerly-anticipated London run of the new 50th anniversary production of the classic rock musical Hair.
Opening at The Vaults in October, Hair is due to play the distinctive subterranean arts venue in London’s Waterloo until Sunday 14 January.
Directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, the new production of the cult show which captured the vibrancy of the youth movement in 1960s America, debuted at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre last year.
The second London transfer resulting from the partnership between the new Manchester theatre space and London arts producer Aria Entertainment, Hair will follow the Off-Broadway love story Yank! which has been playing the Charing Cross Theatre.
Coxon, who also appeared in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, will join the previously announced Daniel Bailey (Motown The Musical), Adam Dawson (West Side Story), Patrick George (Cats UK tour), Jammy Kasongo (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical) and Jessie May (Blondel).
They will feature alongside returning cast members: Natalie Green (Wicked), Laura Johnson (Grease), Shekinah McFarlane (Parade), Robert Metson (Bear), Liam Ross Mills (Rocky Horror Show), Koryann Stevens (West Side Story) and Kristen Wright (Our Seasons End).
With intimate theatre seating for just 200, The Vaults will be transformed into a fully immersive 1060s venue featuring iconic artwork, themed restaurants and stalls selling vintage clothes, wigs and vinyl records.
Hair is produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, Ollie Rosenblatt for Senbla, Hope Mill’s co-owners Joseph Houston and William Whelton and associate producers Guy James and Joe Brown.
The show’s creative team includes musical director Gareth Bretherton, choreographer William Whelton, with set and costume design by Maeve Black and Chris Bogg, lighting design by Ben M Rogers and casting by Benjamin Newsome Casting.
With a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair opened Off-Broadway in 1967. The hippie rock musical moved on to Broadway and arrived in London’s West End a year later. The show’s most recent Broadway revival was in 2009 with a West End revival in 2010.
