The villainous characters from some of our best-loved fairytales take centre stage in London’s Unicorn Theatre’s production of the comic fantasy Baddies: The Musical this November.
The new comic musical from Nancy Harris and Mark Teitler re-imagines the Big Bad Wolf, Rumpelstiltskin, the Ugly Sisters and Captain Hook, as the heroes of a world in which their villainous attributes are under threat from the Council of Bedtime Stories.
Running from 3 November until 24 December, the family-friendly musical will be directed by the Unicorn’s artistic director Purni Morell. Production design is by James Button, with lighting by David W Kidd, sound by Edward Lewis and musical direction by Sam Sommersfield. Joel Fram will serve as musical supervisor.
The cast includes: Dean Nolan (Big Bad Wolf), Christian Roe (Peter Pan), David McKay (Rumpelstiltskin), Kelly Agbowu (Ugly Sister May), Claire Sundin (Ugly Sister Fay), Lila Clements (Guard) and Jack Benjamin (Guard).
Nancy Harris is an award-winning Dublin-born writer whose credits for the Unicorn include the critically acclaimed The Man With the Disturbingly Smelly Foot, Our New Girl (Bush), The Kreutzer Sonata (Gate Theatre), Girl in a Bath and The Cleanest Way to End It (Soho Theatre), Love in a Glass Jar (Abbey Theatre, Dublin) and Little Dolls (Bush).
Mark Teitler’s credits for the Unicorn include The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. His other work includes Stuck On a Sunday (Royal Opera House) which was made into an animated film by BAFTA-winning Marc Craste, Blood + Gifts for Howard Davies at the National Theatre, Does My Society Look Big in This for Tom Morris at Bristol Old Vic and The Secret Agent at the Young Vic. Teitler is currently under commission for work at the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic.
The Unicorn is also holding a series of special events for children in the run-up to Christmas:
Fairytale Fun is a post-show workshop for children aged 6–11. The youngsters will make tiaras, masks, helmets and hats; play drama games and finish with an ice cream treat (14 and 21 November, £8).
Sleepover: Magical Midnight Mischief – children aged 8–12 will watch the show, meet the actors and take part in a whole host of activities onstage before spending the night on the set (11 and 18 Dec, £75 ticket includes dinner, performance, workshop and breakfast).
Children who celebrate their 10th birthday on 1 December 2015 are invited to bring their friends to a special glitzy red carpet performance of Baddies: The Musical. No grown-ups allowed!
