Bishopsgate Institute stages West Side Story in summer 2018

The Bishopsgate Institute will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein with a concert performance of his classic West Side Story next summer.

Also marking the centennial of Broadway legend Jerome Robbins who directed and choreographed the original production of the Romeo & Juliet-inspired musical over 60 years ago, the show will play The Great Hall, at the Bishopsgate Institute from 26 June until 1 July 2018.

Featuring a full orchestra, the show will be performed under amateur licence with amateur actors working with a professional creative team and an orchestra of professional musicians.

With direction by Toby Hine and choreography by Lemington Ridley, the show will be produced by Francesca Canty for Bishopsgate Institute. The musical director is to be announced.

The doomed love story of Maria and Tony will be played out in the stunning 120-year-old Great Hall, performed in the round with limited cabaret seating. The ‘up close and personal’ performance will feature cast members weaving in and out of the audiences as they perform.

Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe), the amateur production will feature a full 29-piece orchestra made up of the best up and coming musicians.

Originally produced on Broadway by Robert E. Griffith and Harold S. Prince the entire original production was directed and choreographed by Robbins.
