Nominations are open for the 18th WhatsOnStage Awards which will be held at the Prince of Wales Theatre on Sunday 18 February 2018.
The only major theatre awards to be voted for entirely by the theatregoing public will next year include two new categories – Best Show Poster and Best Original Cast Recording.
This year’s awards were dominated by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child which set a new WhatsOnStage record for a play with eight awards while Half a Sixpence led the way in the musical theatre categories, winning three awards. Cameron Mackintosh was this year’s recipient of the Equity Award For Services To Theatre.
Announcing the 18th edition of the awards, WhatsOnStage’s chief operating officer Sita McIntosh said: “Following feedback from our online readers, this year we are thrilled to add two new awards to the line-up. Best Show Poster reflects the often unsung work that goes on behind the scenes to create a successful, and in many cases iconic brand for a production, some of which are as instantly recognisable as many global consumer brands today.
“Best Original Cast Recording has been introduced to reflect the fact that the experience of live theatre can continue, even after you’ve left the auditorium. A memorable production can be re-lived over and over again.”
The categories for this year’s awards are: Best Actor in a Play; Best Actress in a Play; Best Actor in a Musical; Best Actress in a Musical; Best Supporting Actor in a Play; Best Supporting Actress in a Play; Best Supporting Actor in a Musical; Best Supporting Actress in a Musical; Best New Play; Best New Musical; Best Play Revival; Best Musical Revival; Best Direction; Best Choreography; Best Costume Design; Best Set Design; Best Lighting Design; Best Video Design; Best Off-West End Production; Best Regional Production; Best Original Cast Recording; Best Show Poster; Best West End Show; and the Equity Award for Services To Theatre.
