The Mayor of Musical Theatre – a brand-new podcast produced in association with Musical Theatre Review as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations – has released its first episode.

Host Ian Bowkett is a theatre writer/photographer and the composer of recent cult favourites The Sam Neill Experience: A Dance Musical and Sisyphus: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Musical.

Each week, he will pretend to be a mayor (for reasons unclear) and talk to a celebrity guest about their favourite musicals.

After choosing a show from each of the mayor’s categories (funniest musical, best movie musical, etc), the guest will decide on one show that, as mayor, Bowkett should order run in the West End forever.

Episode One featuring West End superstar Anna-Jane Casey is out now on all major podcasting platforms. In a wide-ranging chat recorded before a performance of her show Mother Goose, Casey discusses the shows that have had a big impact on her, backstage antics at the Old Friends Stephen Sondheim memorial concert, and working with Ian McKellen and John Bishop in pantomime.

“There are a few people you would think would have no fear whatsoever: Dame Judi Dench, Michael Ball…” Casey says of the Old Friends concert cast. “All in the wings, literally cacking their pants.”

Elsewhere in the discussion, Casey admits that she is yet to see Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ubiquitous musical Hamilton, declares her favourite currently running West End show to be Cabaret, and reveals the musical score that most often gets stuck in her head is West Side Story.

Hear her discuss these shows, her other favourite musicals, and which one show she wants to run forever in episode one of The Mayor of Musical Theatre podcast.

The Mayor of Musical Theatre has a stellar series of guests lined up for Season One, so subscribe now wherever you get your podcasts!

Anna-Jane Casey has most recently been seen in the Olivier Award-winning revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club starring as Fraulein Kost, and her prolific stage career includes the West End productions of Billy Elliot, Starlight Express, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Spamalot, Stepping Out, Chicago, Grease and so much more.
