Linda Nolan and Lousie Jameson lead the cast of the musical Rumpy Pumpy!
Barbara Jane Mackie’s Rumpy Pumpy!, the home-grown musical based on the true story of two WI members who became the unlikely champions of the rights of prostitutes, is to return to the stage this autumn.
Due to open at Windsor’s Theatre Royal in November ahead of seven performances at London’s Union Theatre, the show which debuted in London last year, is inspired by the story of Hampshire Women’s Institute members Jean Johnson and Shirley Landels who campaigned to improve conditions for ‘working girls’ everywhere.
A Channel 4 documentary about the campaign in 2008 proved the starting point for writer and composer Mackie’s first foray into musical theatre.
Mackie says: “I approached Jean and Shirley and suggested the notion of a musical based on their campaign and they were delighted. The title Rumpy Pumpy! came early – my way of wrapping up a complex subject and creating something fun, frothy, but with a gritty edge. I was inspired to take on this dark and difficult subject matter and make something digestible and entertaining. Always the best way to change hearts and minds.”
Directed by Simon Greiff (associate director on The Rocky Horror Show Live), the show will star former member of the Nolan sisters pop act, Linda Nolan (Blood Brothers) and screen and stage favourite Louise Jameson (EastEnders, The Mousetrap, 60th Anniversary UK tour). Further casting is to be announced at a later date.
The Tea & Crumpets Production will also be produced by Mackie with executive producers Terry Loveday, Michael Loveday and Tony Steyger. The creative team includes musical director Paul Smith and musical arranger Steve Parker.
Rumpy Pumpy! will play the Theatre Royal, Windsor from Tuesday 1 until Saturday 5 November before moving to the Union Theatre, London from Monday 14 until Saturday 19 November.
A film version is currently in development by Carnaby International.
Mackie’s second musical Cowboy Girls is due to debut at an Off-West End theatre next year.
