The Tony Award-winning musical The Secret Garden has returned to the West End for a special summer season aimed at family audiences. Here, Musical Theatre Review’s official photographer Roy Tan offers our readers access to an exclusive selection of images from the production.
Directed by Rupert Hands, the production is running until 31 August at London’s Ambassadors Theatre.
Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s much-loved 1911 novel, the show has a script and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Marsha Norman and music by Grammy Award winner Lucy Simon.
The latest from the team behind Annie Jr, which smashed box office records at the Arts Theatre last summer and gave 350 young performers the chance to appear in the West End, the shortened Spring Version of The Secret Garden has been adapted by its creators to be performed by young people.
Three hundred children have been cast in the show, chosen from over 2,000 youngsters who auditioned for their chance to take to the West End stage.
Producer Matthew Chandler of P2P Productions said: “This is the European premiere of a new version of The Secret Garden, specially adapted to be performed with just four adult actors and 20 children. We have 21 teams of child actors who will perform in rotation throughout the season. It is a fantastic opportunity for all the youngsters involved.”
Director Hands added: “Giving young people the opportunity to work on great shows in great spaces is vital for the future of theatre.”
The creative team also includes: musical director Richard Baker, choreographer Jamie Neale, costume and set designer Lizzy Leech, resident director Julie Thomas, resident choreographer Katy Stephens and producers Chandler and Stephan Garcia for P2P Productions.
