Nica Burns has unveiled the full cast and creative team for the world premiere of first-time playwright Ashley Robinson’s stage adaptation of Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain at @sohoplace in May.
As previously announced the production which reunites the team behind the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – director Jonathan Butterell, singer songwriter Dan Gillespie Sells, and producer Burns – will feature the West End debuts of Tony and BAFTA Award-nominee Mike Faist (Dear Evan Hansen, Broadway, West Side Story) and Academy Award-nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Boy Erased) as the central characters Jack and Ennis alongside Fairground Attraction singer Eddi Reader as The Balladeer and her onstage band Sean Green, Meelie Traill, Julian Jackson and BJ Cole.
They will be joined by Emily Fairn (The Responder, BBCTV) who will make her stage debut as Ennis’ wife Alma, Paul Hickey (The Playboy of the Western World, National Theatre) as Older Ennis and Martin Marquez (Sweet Charity, Donmar Warehouse) as Joe/Bill/Jack’s Father.
The creative team of set and costume designer Tom Pye, lighting designer David Finn and sound designer Christopher Shutt is completed by casting director Shaheen Baig, intimacy director Tommy Ross-Williams, fight director Kevin McCurdy, production manager Phil Wilding, costume supervisor Zeb Lalljee, wigs maker/supervisor Sam Cox, props supervisor Lily Mollgaard and vocal and dialect coaches Mary Irwin and Ben Furey.
Presented by Nica Burns, Adam Blanshay Productions, Lambert Jackson Productions and Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, performances will begin @sohoplace on 10 May ahead of a press night on 18 May. The limited season will run until 12 August.
Discussing the newest adaptation of her original 1997 short story, writer Prouix said: “Brokeback Mountain has been recreated in several different forms, each with its own distinctive moods and impact. Ashley’s script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments.”
Brokeback Mountain will be the first world premiere play to be originated at @sohoplace and will be the fourth production to open at the new London venue, following Marvellous, As You Like It and Medea.
