The producers of Burlesque the Musical have confirmed that the show’s planned London engagement has been “postponed” to 2027.
A production was due to run at The Arts at Marble Arch from 12 September 2026 to 31 January 2027 with Olivier Award winner Cassidy Janson as Tess Richards and Natalia Jacques as Ali Rose. The musical’s first London season played at the Savoy Theatre last summer.
A statement from the producers read: “We are already exploring opportunities for a major London return in 2027 and look forward to announcing our future West End home in due course. This is a strategic decision designed to ensure the production returns to London exactly as we want it to.”
The producers are investors in The Arts at Marble Arch, powered by TodayTix, having invested a substantial sum in its development.
They added: “The relationship with the theatre is important to us. We backed the vision for The Arts Theatre at Marble Arch because we believed London deserved another exciting commercial theatre, and we remain incredibly proud to have played a part in helping bring it to life.”
In a news story on the WhatsOnStage website, BECTU’s head Philippa Childs stated: “We are extremely disappointed by the situation on the London opening of Burlesque the Musical. The ‘postponement’ to 2027 will mean that freelancers will miss out on months of expected income, leaving them in financial difficulty. The production have indicated that they will endeavour to provide alternative work where possible and we are seeking more detail on this.
“While the start of the UK tour of Burlesque has been delayed, it is reassuring that the production looks set to continue. We are in contact with the production company and we will continue to support members as the situation develops.”
In another change to scheduled events, it was also announced that, “following final technical preparations”, the touring production of Burlesque would open at the Sunderland Empire (13-22 August, instead of from 6-22 August as originally announced), and not as planned, at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking on 25 July.
The reason given for this change was that the creative team needed the time “to deliver the spectacular production of Burlesque the Musical audiences adore”. The show will now run in Woking form 3-7 November 2026.
The producers added that the tour was fully financed and on a secure footing, as verified by third parties, allowing the company to focus entirely on delivering the highest-quality production possible for audiences nationwide.
Burlesque The Musical features a book by the backstage movie’s director and original writer Steven Antin with additional material by Kate Wetherhead. The musical also features music and lyrics by pop superstars Christina Aguilera and Sia, multi-award-winning songwriter Diane Warren and new music by Todrick Hall and Jess Folley.
The creative team for the production includes director Racky Plews, choreographer Robin Antin, choreographer Aaron Renfree, associate choreographer Xena Gusthart, orchestrator and arranger Tom Curran, musical supervisor Adam Langston, musical director Rob Wicks, set designer Sara Perks, lighting designer Joshie Harriette, costume designer Marco Marco, sound designer Ben Harrison, video designer Duncan McLean, wigs designer Marco Marco, Jess & Jo for JJ Wigs, make-up designer: Dominic Skinner and casting director Harry Blumenau.
Featuring a star-studded cast led by Cher, Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming and Peter Gallagher, the original film featured the Golden Globe Award-winning Diane Warren-penned song ‘You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me’ performed by Cher.
