Zac Hamilton plays Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre, London
Casting has been announced for All Star Productions’ next production, a rare professional staging of the classic Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre in Walthamstow, London.
With music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Lee Adams and a book by Michael Stewart, the production will run from 11 August to 4 September (press night is 14 August).
The cast includes: Ryan Forde Iosco (playing Albert Peterson), Liberty Buckland (Rose Alvarez), Zac Hamilton (Conrad Birdie), Jayne Ashley (Mae Patterson/Ursula Merkle), Benedikt De La Bédoyère (Hugo Peabody), Lucas James (Harvey Johnson), Lewis Asquith (Charles F Maude), Abigail Matthews (Kim MacAfee), Beth Bradley (Nancy), Emily Noke (Alice/Gloria Rasputin), Harry Hart (Harry MacAfee), Stephanie Lysé (Doris MacAfee), Stephen Loriot (Randolph MacAfee), Flora Charlton (Margie) and Stephanie Palmer (Penelope Ann).
The creative team is led by director James Hume, musical director Aaron Clingham and choreographer Anthony Whitman. Costume design is by Ryan Walklett, lighting designer is by Sky Bembury and producer/set designer is Andrew Yon.
A Tony Award-winning success on Broadway in 1960 (the original Broadway cast included Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera), Bye Bye Birdie transferred to the West End the following year. The musical was also adapted for cinema and TV. In 2009 there was a Broadway revival staged by the Roundabout Theatre Company.
Bye Bye Birdie is the story of rock star Conrad Birdie who is the biggest artist to top the charts. Women love him, men want to be him and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at the mere mention of his name.
But when the United States Army drafts Birdie, manager Albert Peterson sees his meal ticket preparing to fly the coop, much to the delight of longtime love Rose Alvarez, who can’t wait for Albert to ditch the music business and become an English teacher. Desperate for a publicity stunt big enough to help them survive Birdie’s departure, Albert and Rose hatch a plan: send Conrad to small-town America to plant his goodbye kiss on one lucky fan for the entire world to see.
