Sheffield Theatres has confirmed casting for artistic director Robert Hastie’s Christmas production of the 1960s romantic musical comedy She Loves Me at the Crucible.
Hastie’s festive follow-up to his Christmas 2019 revival of another classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls will feature that production’s leading lady Alex Young.
Young, who returned to Sheffield in 2019 to play Sarah Brown after appearing in the prestigious venue’s previous productions Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Show Boat and Anything Goes, will play Amalia Balash opposite David Thaxton (The Phantom of the Opera, Come From Away) in his Sheffield Theatres debut as Georg Nowack in the new production which will run from 11 December 2021 until 15 January 2022.
They will be joined by Fascinating Aïda’s Adele Anderson (Closer to Heaven, Nine), Lewis Cornay (Mary Poppins, The Book of Mormon), Andy Coxon (Curtains, West Side Story), Marc Elliott (The Girl on the Train, Macbeth), Kaisa Hammarlund (Fun Home, Sweet Charity) and Karl Seth (Annie Get Your Gun, Broken Wings).
The ensemble includes: Zac Adlam (Cinderella), Michael Anderson (The Sound of Music), Kamau Davis (Sleeping Beauty), Lawrence Guntert (Cabaret, also dance captain and assistant choreographer for She Loves Me), Samantha Hull (Guys and Dolls), Esme Laudat (Hairspray) and Gleanne Purcell-Brown (Curtains).
Commenting on the production, Hastie said: “Our Christmas musical this year promises to be a glorious, heart-warming swirl of festive joy. It’s a classic story of true love flourishing where you least expect it, set amid the bustle of December shoppers. We can’t wait to present you with a Christmas treat featuring new and familiar faces on the Crucible stage this winter.”
Based on a play by Miklos Laszlo, with a book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, She Loves Me premiered on Broadway in 1963. With the same source material as the films The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, the multi-award-winning She Loves Me is the romantic story of two perfume shop assistants who are each unaware that they are secret pen pals.
She Loves Me was first seen in the West End in 1964 and there have been two award winning revivals in the West End and on Broadway. The Sheffield Crucible version of the warm-hearted musical will be designed by Ben Stones with movement direction by Ewan Jones and casting by Stuart Burt.
